  • Appalachian Restoration Act (Sen. Lamar Alexander, R., Tenn): A bill to amend the Clean Water Act to eliminate valley or hollow fills associated with some types of surface coal mining.
  • Latest Developments:
    • TMA representatives met with Sen. Alexander in his Washington offices Thursday, June 25th to discuss the bill's consequences and propose opening a dialogue to amend the bill.
    • A committee hearing on the bill was also held on Thursday, June 25th and included testimony from Paul Sloan, Deputy Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
    • In response to the bill, out-of-state coal mining operators and others in the industry called for a boycott on visiting Tennessee - including shopping, dining and attractions.

  • American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (Rep. Henry Waxman, D., Calf./Rep. Edward Markey, D., Mass): More commonly referred to as "Cap and Trade," this legislation will create a massive energy tax on businesses, while also threatening the viablity of domestic energy production.
    • The House of Representatives passed the legislation on June 26, 2009 by a vote of 216 - 212.
    • The bill was placed on the Senate Legislative calendar on July 7, 2009.
